Aslyn & The Naysayers...and The Last Waltz

photograph courtesy of Aslyn & The Naysayers

Yesterday was for all intensive purposes The Last Waltz. Sticking to the basics of a blend of old-time string band, rip-roaring acoustic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, with a few hints toward alt country, my 5-6 month stint as host of WFCF's Sunday Bluegrass Breakdown came to a close.

Of all the bands that I've featured on the show since January 2008, it was my sincere pleasure to introduce to you Aslyn & The Naysayers. Flagler College graduates on Flagler College Radio...hard to beat. Jim on lead, Matt on rhythm, and Aslyn on vocals, the trio creates a fantastic blend of folk-oriented pop that often segues into more traditional bluegrass. Featured on yesterday's show were two tracks from the band's self-released, self-titled cd: Wind And Rain and Fox On The Run. The two songs provide ample opportunity to show off Aslyn's gorgeous voice, Matt's uncanny knack for harmonizing, and Jim's prodigious flat picking. With the accompaniment of New River Bluegrass' John Parrish on fiddle, the band's sound is greatly expanded, becoming more lush and evocative. A great band and a great set of songs from a great group of people. Support this band!

New River Bluegrass

Doug Armstrong of New River Bluegrass was instrumental in my being able to host the Sunday Bluegrass Breakdown. Doug loaned me a portion of his extensive bluegrass collection and I owe him a debt of gratitude.

photo courtesy of New River Bluegrass

Nearly 15 years ago, Doug's band New River String Band burst onto the scene as an award winning trio in the Pizza Hut "International Bluegrass Showdown". Through the years the group has progressed into a six piece ensemble with roots in traditional and contemporary bluegrass, now hailing as New River Bluegrass.

One thing hasn't changed over all the years; the love and excitement of performing hard driving and thought provoking acoustic music. It's evident when you can catch this group live, and even more so when you can sit just feet away from them and listen in to the wonderful back and forth play of instruments and tight vocal harmonies. NRB lives for that experience; to feel the reverberation of their acoustic sound, to be immersed in high lonesome vocals. Most importantly, they love to share the experience with you.

The band recently played in Monticello with Blue Highway. Blue Highway enjoyed the performance so much, they've asked New River Bluegrass to open for them again on their next Florida performance....

Froggy Went A-Courtin'

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Frog Went A-Courtin" is an English language folk song. Its first known appearance is in Wedderburn's Complaynt of Scotland (1548) under the name "The frog came to the myl dur." There is a reference in the London Company of Stationer's Register of 1580 to "A Moste Strange Weddinge of the Frogge and the Mouse." The oldest known musical version is in Thomas Ravenscroft's Melismata in 1611. There are many texts of the ballad.

Frog rides to ask Miss Mouse to marry him. She is willing but must ask permission of Uncle Rat. Rat's permission received, the two work out details of the wedding. Some versions end with a cat or other creature devouring the participants. Sometimes the frog gets away from the cat but is later swallowed by a duck.

Spaeth has a note claiming that the original version of this was supposed to refer to the Duke of Anjou's wooing of Elizabeth I of Engliand. If the second known version (1611, in Melismata, also reprinted in Chappell) were the oldest, this might be possible — there are seeming political references to "Gib, our cat" and "Dick, our Drake." But the Wedderburn text, which at least anticipates the song, predates the reign of Queen Elizabeth by nine years, and Queen Mary by four. If it refers to any queen at all, it would seemingly have to be Mary Stuart; Evelyn K. Wells however, in the liner notes to the LP Brave Boys; New England traditions in folk music, (New World Records 239, 1977) suggests that the original may have been satirically altered in 1580 when it was recorded in the register of the London Company of Stationers, as this would have been at the height of the unpopular courtship.

Gamble Rogers to Appear at Gamblefest 2008

GAMBLEFEST 2008

Legendary singer/guitar player/storyteller Gamble Rogers will make several special appearances at the 13th Annual Gamble Rogers Festival thanks to a combination of popular demand and modern technology!

Gamblefest will take place May 2-4, 2008 at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds. Those attending this year’s festival on Saturday, May 3, will be treated to special recorded live performances by Gamble on the Baby Grand Theater stage via DVD and big screen projection. These showings will run at regular intervals throughout the day on Saturday, May 3rd.

“Our goal this year is to re-create the mythical Oklawaha County whose residents were the characters for much of Gamble’s storytelling,” explains Festival president Paul Linser. “We are especially thankful to the Gamble Rogers Memorial Foundation and its president, Charles Steadham, for allowing us to bring Gamble’s finger picking guitar style and singing/storytelling talents to life in St. Johns County for all those attending the festival this year.” In addition to Rogers himself, national, local and regional artists are scheduled to appear at the event; the complete lineup will be announced in the near future.

Rogers lived in St. Augustine and became famous on the folk circuit with his songs and tales of Oklawaha County. He died tragically October 10, 1991 unsuccessfully trying to rescue a drowning tourist in the waters off Flagler Beach. The Gamble Rogers Festival is dedicated to ensuring that the memory and music of Gamble Rogers will continue to be an integral part of Florida folk music tradition.

Quality Inn at I95 and CR207 is offering a special Gamble Rogers Festival rate; for more info or to book rooms please contact the hotel at 904-829-3435

Hot for Teacher?

Cover image courtesy of David Lee Roth.

I had recently joked with a friend about the possibility of finding a Bluegrass cover of Van Halen's "Hot for Teacher" and a quick Google search put me face-to-face with a surprising reality...Dave had actually teamed up with a Bluegrass band and allowed for Bluegrass covers of Van Halen's music. I haven't heard the whole album, as a matter of fact, I jumped right to David Grisman & Sons version of "Hot for Teacher." The song was featured during yesterday's Sunday Bluegrass Breakdown.

March Madness!

Sunday Bluegrass Breakdown entered into the fray of March Madness with a show spotlighting the work of Alison Krauss (see previous post). The 36 year old, 21-time Grammy Award winner has had an amazing 28-year career. Understated.

Other than songs by Alison and her usual suspects (Union Station), the show kicked out tunes by newer artists like AJ Roach and old favorites like Benny Martin's "Wabash Cannonball," Bill Monroe's "Y'all Come, " and The Country Gentlemen's "Fox On The Run."

First played among the non-Krauss songs was "Revelation," the title track by Virginia artist AJ Roach. This release has hit #1 in England, yet I've really not heard much press about it in the US. Maybe I should listen to more radio.

in 1985 and released her first solo album at sixteen in 1987. She was invited to join the band with which she still performs,

She has thus far released more than ten albums, appeared on numerous soundtracks, and has helped usher in a new interest in bluegrass music in the United States. Krauss' second Union Station album Everytime You Say Goodbye was released in 1992, and she went on to win her second Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album of the year. She then joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1993 at the age of 21. She was the youngest cast member at the time, and the first bluegrass artist to join the Opry in twenty-nine years. She also collaborated on a project with the Cox Family in 1994, a bluegrass album called I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.

Now That I've Found You: A Collection, a compilation of older releases and some covers of her favorite works by other artists, was released in 1995. Some of these covers include Bad Company's "Oh Atlanta," The Foundations' "Baby, Now That I've Found You," and The Beatles' "I Will." The single "When You Say Nothing at All" reached the top five on the Billboard country chart; the album peaked in the top fifteen on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, and sold two million copies to become Krauss' first double-platinum album. Krauss also was nominated for four Country Music Association Awards and won all of them.

So Long So Wrong, another Union Station album, was released in 1997 and won the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album. Some critics said it was "untraditional" and "likely [to] change quite a few... Minds about bluegrass."

Her next solo release in 1999, Forget About It, included one of her two tracks to appear on the Billboard adult contemporary chart, "Stay." The album was certified gold, and charted within the top seventy-five of the Billboard 200 and in the top five of the country chart.

Their next album, New Favorite, was released on August 14, 2001. The album went on to win the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album, with the single "The Lucky One" winning a Grammy as well. New Favorite was followed up by the double platinum double album LiveThe Louisville Palace. in 2002 and a release of a DVD of the same live performance in 2003. Both the album and the DVD were recorded during a performance at

Lonely Runs Both Ways was released in 2004, and eventually became another Alison Krauss & Union Station gold certified album.

Truegrass Vs. Newgrass

On Sunday, February 27, the Sunday Bluegrass Breakdown dove into the seemingly wide crevasse between "old time" bluegrass and its more liberal younger sibling newgrass/progressive bluegrass/jamgrass. The show played like a bi-polar nightmare, with truegrass tunes such as Alan Shelton's 35-second-long "Sourwood Mountain" paired off against David Grisman's expansive "Mondo Mando," which clocks in at 8:58.

I guess I overthought it, or just worried about it too much, but by the time the show was over, I felt like it hadn't worked at all. There just wasn't a nice ebb and flow. It was structured too extremely, even though that extreme was exactly what I had hoped to explore.

In some ways, the dichotomy is a farce. Bands such as Flatt & Scruggs indicated early on that the structure of bluegrass could include a variety of chord changes and song structures. It was this more expansive framework that was later capitalized on by artists such as David Grisman and Bela Fleck (among many others), and today by the likes of Blueground Undergrass and Leftover Salmon.

Set List: Alan Shelton - Sourwood Mountain, Sam Bush - Clover Leaf Rag, Jay Farrar - Buffalo Jump, Carl Jackson - Foggy Mountain Breakdown, Laurel Canyon Ramblers - RU4 Reel, The Doc Watson Family - Fisher's Hornpipe, David Grier, That's Just Perfect, Blue Highway - Mountain of the Lord, Larry Rice - Strodes Creek, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder - Battle Cry, Vern & Ray - The Leather Britches, Benny Thomasson - Laughing Boy, Ralph Stanley - I'll Remember You Love In My Prayers, David Grisman - Mondo Mando, Nickel Creek - House Carpenter, Blue Highway - Whither Thou Go, Aubrey Haney - Maggie, The Doc Watson Family - Go Shoot Old Davey Dugger, Aaron O'Rourke Trio - Liza Jane (solo), Chatham County Line - Sun Up, Laurel Canyon Ramblers - The Weasel, Carolina Chocolate Drops - Dixie, Blueground Undergrass - Ole Love Ole Tune, Noam Pikelny - Souper Grouper, Paul Warren - Sally Goodin', Carl Jackson - Grey Eagle, Allison Krauss & Union Station - Little Liza Jane, Jason Titley - Jimmy's Barnyard Shuffle, Chris Thile - Ah Spring, Dry Branch Fire Squad - The Gospel Way, Paul Williams - Been A Hard Working Pilgrim, The Be Good Tanyas - Crow Waltz, David West - Maze, The Johnny Staats Project - Shafer's Reel, Vern & Ray - Hard Times, Benny Thomasson - Forked Deer, Merle Travis - 9 Lb. Wintergrass Festival!

Wintergrass!
February 21-24, 2008

By Kim Ruehl

The Overview: Wintergrass takes place in downtown Tacoma, WA. The performances are spread over a couple of hotels and a nearby church. Friday and Saturday mornings are workshops galore on everything from overcoming stage fright to mastering Old Time fiddle. The hotel lobbies are replete with impromptu jams.

The Music: Wintergrass is a Bluegrass music festival, but there is a lot of appreciation for Old Time Music. A lot of the jam sessions include people playing Old Time tunes. Many of the performers are old school bluegrass, though there are occasionally some Old Time bands and some contemporary country/folk singer/songwriters. Performers include well-known legends as well as local and regional newcomers.

The Jams:
This is really the reason most people come to Wintergrass. Especially locals from the Pacific Norhtwest will come to Tacoma with their instruments, and never even purchase a ticket to the festival - they'll just hang out in the lobby for three days and play with strangers. Fun to participate or just to sit and listen.

What to Bring:
Wintergrass takes place in February in the Pacific Northwest. Tacoma is on the water, so there can be some awfully cold air blowing in and down from Alaska. Bring a coat and a hat. Bring your instrument if you play one. You might want to pack a lunch if you're driving in for the day - or make sure you get a rental car, if you think you'll want more than two dining options.

What to Expect:
Expect tons of folks jamming in the hotel at all hours of day and night. The only place you'll find some quiet is in the bathroom. The performances are spread out over a couple of hotels and a church. The church is, by far, the best place to hear music, so try to put in some quality time there. There are a lot of unknown performers as well as big names. You can usually trust the unknowns are going to be just as great - so venture out to see a few of them.

Country rocks, but Bluegrass rules!

Whew!!! Feels like I'm getting my sea legs. On Sunday, February 10--after taking a weekend off in the Bluegrass state--I spun Session 3 of the Sunday Bluegrass Breakdown from the WFCF studios on the campus of Flagler College in lovely St. Augustine, Florida.

Racing out of the gate with Carl Jackson's "Ground Speed," the show highlighted both old "True" Grass, Bluegrass Gospel, and more modernist leanings on the idiom. At times I felt I was at church, particularly in the latter parts of the show when Patty Loveless, The Isaacs, and Alison Krauss weighed in.

I'm off Sunday, February 17, as it's DooWop Sunday.
